I really am extremely Irish, yes I am

Thursday, 10 September 2009

I love the Irish and am, in fact, very Irish. It's really, really true. Or so I am told by those in the know. Last year, on parents' evening, I met my son's teacher for the first time. She cut to the chase, "are you Irish?"
"No," I replied
"Are you sure?" she persisted. Now there's a thing, I was now starting to doubt myself. Perhaps I was really very Irish, but had been swapped by the pesky leprechauns as a babe.
"Not really," I ventured uncertainly.
"Well, you sound Irish." She said finally and triumphantly.
And I thought I was there to discuss my son lol.

Here are my Irish Credentials

I have a real Irish friend (and all my little Irish fairy friends too)
I warm to Irish bloggers
I love hearing Irish people speak (when they are not saying feck and bastard lol)
I was born with carrot coloured hair
I do sound Irish
I have a quirky, impish sense of humour and am prone to a bit of sarcasm
I dance in a disorderly way (according to Bobo)
I can drink four pints of Guinness and still arm wrestle a whole rugby team
I like wild and desolate places (well, that's a teensy lie, but I do sooo want to sound more Irish)
I am around one eighth Irish
I can dance just like the women in Riverdance, after a few drinks. It's a just a matter of wearing a short green dress, clutching your arms to your sides and having fiddly diddly feet. How hard can that be lol?

Is there any nationality you have always wanted to be? Why is that?

Of course you must be Oirish sure, so you are (hic). You're just pretending to be Scotterish, you little devil. I don't really care what nationality I am, I have no particular loyalty to Britain or Ireland, I'd just like to be somewhere warm and sunny and not pelted with rain every ten minutes! Oh and somewhere where they take art and culture seriously and don't think an insipid watercolour landscape is Great Art.

The real test of whether you're Irish is whether you complain constantly about how useless our politicians are but at the same time do absolutely nothing about it.

The Italian thinks the test of how Irish you are is how hard the rain has to pelt down before you actually put up your umbrella. If you don't own an umbrella you're as Irish as they come.

My brother and I are 1/16 American Indian and when we were in grammar school we pretended to be full blooded Indians. We still share a deep interest in American Indian culture so I guess I would like to be that. Lucky you for being born with carrot red hair. My hubby was too and he was the only one in their family with red hair.

Being Scottish is virtually Irish isn't it? Many of the same character traits/flaws and an ability to tolerate 360 days of rain a year.
I'd like to be Canadian, which is sort of like being Scottish but less cynical. And less wet.

My favorite accent is Sottish, but I'm fine with being an American of Irish descent.

Nick: I am a little devil, so I am! Are you saying Claude Monet is really pretend Irish in disguise?

Caro: I like your Irish tests, can I use them on my friends?

TechnoBabe: Welcome! 1/16 American Indian, how cool is that? I am really jealous now.

During the Edinburgh festival it always amuses me to see 'Genuine' American Indians playing pan pipes.

Loth: Given the rain we share, yes, Irish and Scotterish are virtually the same. I do like the sound of the Canadians, though. It might take me a while to become less cynical.

B.E. Earl: Hello there, I recognise you from Elizabeth's blog. Being of Irish descent is indeed something to be proud of.

Well, I'm Scottish and proud of it.

(Ha, you won't believe what happened to Chris on Friday. A wee yob actually screamed at him to, and I quote, 'get back to your own country'...much hilarity ensued!!)

I'm an eighth Irish as well and although I'm a New Yorker through and through I apparently sound Irish when I'm angry. So does my mother (1/4 Irish) and so did her mother (no Irish at all).
I'm also Italian and when I was very young my grandmother's not so politically correct neighbor used to call my brother and I "Wop-aho Indians." Not knowing that this was a slur, I told my teacher that was what I was during a lesson on ethnicity. I believe my parents got a talking to.
