Insomnia

Saturday, 29 August 2009

It's 5am and I have been awake for an hour. That's what comes of going to bed shattered and bloated at 9pm. I want to be asleep, but years of mummying have made me a very light sleeper.

So, I have decided to look on the bright side. What are the best bits of 4am waking?

1) Sneaking cracker snacks into bed to eat without using a plate (rock n roll lives).
2) TOTAL silence in the flat to think and read and muse.
3) The possibility of encountering a wide eyed boy child in the hall requiring a mummy cuddle
4) The capacity to write slightly self indulgent poems about life and the universe, which seem rather wanky when read in daylight hours.
5) A sudden desire to complete unfinished tasks which aren't normally considered
6) No one around to giggle and tease as I lie face down on a hot water bottle in the lounge to ease my sore tummy.
7) I am already awake and so won't be woken up by drunken students walking home singing and bashing bins.
8) I can almost convince myself that I am stealing a march on the day and conveniently forget that I am going to be shattered again by 9pm.

I've been up for two hours too, after falling asleep at 10pm. I'm enjoying The Hoobs and eating a chocolate souffle and contemplating ironing.

I often wake up at 4 or 5. No idea why - old age, anxiety, refreshed enough anyway? If I don't get back to sleep again, I make a cup of tea and read for a while. And you're right, the quiet is good for thinking.

I sympathise over the drunken students. Most of the locals in our student district have moved out in despair. The riot police had to be called in on St Patrick's Day!!

Oh imsomnia sucks. I'm a 4am waker too. I tend to be a determined "I WILL sleep again" type and lie in my bed endlessly running though sleepy meditation techniques.

Still feels like I've got a fluffy creature asleep in my brain the next day though.

You made it sound quite desirable! Funny how, once a mummy, you never quite sleep in the same way again.

    Like number 4!

I only get it the very odd time, Hull, but try and make the best of it.

GVH: You manage to make it sound so civilised.

Nick: I must remember to read and not go on the computer next time.

Sounds like you have more disorderly students than we do. Respect.

Miss Tickle: That fluffy creature has taken up head space for me too. And today, the wee blighter gave me a migraine.

Suburbia: Sleep is never ever the same, you're right. And yes, I chose to write number 4 instead of publishing said wanky poem on the blog.

WWW: It hasn't happened since Friday night, so I think I am over it. I think I will journal write next time.

I had one of those nights last night. There is nothing good to to do at 4 am. I did think 'sex always leaves me sleepy and relaxed' and contemplated waking Husband but thought better of it!

Liz: Had you woken Mr Liz, he may have been grumpy for a bit, but I am sure he would have found a way to work through it lol.
