Love films, love eccentric choices
Tuesday, 12 May 2009

Questions are being raised in hullabtowers regarding my eccentric film choices. We have a monthly film subscription and I make all the choices. It's not that I am a control freak, far from it, I am just keen to be eclectic. Often it's hit and miss, with recent successes including Little Miss Sunshine and Juno. Olive in Little Miss Sunshine (photo above) reminds me of myself as a wee girl. She is full of enthusiasm and life, but destined never to fit into the norm. I loved the way her rag tag family supported her in her beauty contest bid and the way that they made a mockery of the children's beauty pageants.
Bobo smiled when I said our new selection was in. Of course it's that well known film Amarcord, about Mussolini's Italy. What else. The selections so far haven't been too deadly, well apart from the film about the daily drudgery of an Argentian policeman. It had no plot to speak of and was pretty grim. Bobo said he liked it, but was he just being polite?

The daily drudgery of an Argentinian policeman? Cor, life-enhancing stuff. I have to say I run a mile from any of these social realist films about wasters on council estates strung out on drugs etc. I prefer not to be rendered suicidal.
Haven't seen Little Miss S, must catch up with that one.

Little Miss Sunshine and Juno are both excellent choices. I *loved* the dance scene in LMS! I also recommend Sunshine Cleaning, for an offbeat selection, although it may not be on dvd yet.
Good luck with your current film, it sounds intriguing.

I tried to watch Trainspotting but didn't get it at all and gave up. Amelie's more my style.

Since you like quirky films...I can recommend Everything Is Illuminated. It made me laugh out loud and it made me cry!!

What is this "being polite" of which you speak?

I am the total opposite of a film buff (whatever that may be?!) and have no idea who's in what or what they look like. Am I odd??? ;)

Thank you for your wonderful comments. I have replied twice in great detail, and am not in a mega huff because blogger ate them.
I am going to have a look at all your recommendations.
I am wondering if Suburbia should be called a film ziff (the opposite of buff).
I am cringing at my latest film choice, it so bombed.
Yes bobo, being polite means watching chronic films like the Neil Diamond film Jazz Singer all the way through.
And oh my, what a fin performance Olive gave in LMS. She is wonderful.
Now I am copying this before pesky blogger nabs it again.
